Shagufta Akhtar is the driving force behind the Thumhara Centre, and she has a passion for bringing lonely, isolated elderly people from the BMEA communities together.

How We Were Formed

Having started as a professional tutor, she always wanted to work in the community and decided to volunteer at a day care centre in the Teesside area. Furthermore she secured funding and delivered ESOL classes for the community, after which the Mayor of Thornaby supported her idea, from which the Thumhara Centre was born.

We are particularly passionate about helping women and men who have been left behind in BMEA communities in terms of education and health benefits although everyone from other communities are welcome.

We strongly believe that awareness and early intervention are huge factors in improving the health of the community. Our charity also assists refugees access important services and we offer a signposting service . We are always looking for donations and volunteers to help continue our important work.

Peter Middleton

Peter Middleton has been teaching mathematics for 50 years, including 17 years in Africa. He has used his African experience in teaching ESOL classes in Middlesbrough. He has had many years of raising money for charities, including Save the Children Fund and Cheshire Homes, and helping to identify needs in communities.

Inaam Basit

Before becoming an Entrepreneur, Inaam Basit was working in Barcelona for 7 years as an Executive Sales Manager for a major property company. A successful property and stock market investor. Inaam has vast experience in building and maintaining staff, developing strategic plans and controlling the finance of an organisation.

Shagufta Akhtar

After working in the Teaching industry for a number of years Shagufta decided to work voluntary in the community to gain valuable skills and to teach in the community . This is where she used her transferable skills and managed teachers in the community along side this she also bid wrote and managed a day care centre, from this she was able to locate in a different town and create her own dream of setting up and owning her own Day Care Center which is Thumhara centre Charity .
